(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 27, 2011 ) SHERIDAN, Wyo.- Hear the pounding of hooves, the thwack of the mallet, and the whiz of the ball flying by. Dating back to the late 19th century when two ranching brothers from Scotland introduced the game to their cowhands, polo has become a summer tradition in Sheridan. Every summer the oldest polo club west of the Mississippi, welcomes players and ponies back to the field. Spectators can catch a game multiple times a week in June and nearly every day from July to Labor Day.
Sheridan is home to nine polo fields, two clubs, Flying H Polo Club and the historic Big Big Horn Polo Club., and the Big Horn Equestrian Center. In addition to regular games, polo plays a part at many Sheridan summer events including the WYO Rodeo, Don King Days, and Bozeman Trail Days. Imagine spending an afternoon lounging in the back of a pickup or picnicking on a blanket with a fast-paced match before you, the majestic Big Horn Mountains in the background. The power, beauty, and history of polo lives in Sheridan.
