(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 15, 2012 ) QUITO, ECUADOR – Born in Cuenca, Travel Ecuador founder and owner Juan Rodriguez has seen the adventure travel industry grow from its infancy. Infrastructure improvements and a newfound political stability have helped Latin America emerge as a destination for global adventure travel.
In Ecuador, major improvements to roads and highways provide access to previously passed-over cultural and adventure travel destinations in the countryÂ’s interior.
Few people, if any, are more qualified to speak on Ecuador’s emerging adventure travel industry than Rodriguez. In 1992, he trained and guided the first whitewater raft descent of the country’s Upano River and was part of the first Ecuadoran climbing team to ascend the infamous “nose” of Yosemite’s El Capitan. An amateur aviator, he spends many weekends seeking out new trekking and biking routes through the Andes from the cockpit of his home-built propeller plane.
When Rodriguez founded Travel Ecuador 20 years ago, he did so in a business environment starkly different from the one he works in today. While the Galapagos Islands were a major tourism draw, Ecuador’s poor infrastructure made travel on the mainland – as well as some of the business’s basic operations – far more difficult.
“When I started, communications were difficult. I went three months without a telephone,” Rodriguez said. “Now I am on Skype every day.”
Now, Rodriguez exists in a highly competitive tourism industry; many companies are poised to capitalize on the flood of new travelers coming to Ecuador. To keep ahead, he has pioneered new destinations in the countryÂ’s interior like Cuenca, the countryÂ’s third largest city and cultural capital, or hikes along the ancient Inca trails.
