Myths and Mountains tours geared specifically toward athletic travelers

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 03, 2012 ) Aspen, CO -- The internet and affordable air travel opens new corners of the world to visitors each day, leading more and more people off the beaten path of traditional tourism. For those travelers with an adventurous spirit and a healthy set of lungs, experiential tour operator Myths and Mountains offers active lifestyle trips in some of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Hike to Everest base camp

Populated with colorful tents and equally colorful characters, Everest Base Camp has become a destination in itself, even for travelers with no aspiration of reach the summit of the world’s tallest peak.

For these intrepid trekkers, Myths and Mountains’ 18-day “Kalapatar and Everest Base Camp” trek will take travelers on foot 19,000 feet above sea level. Travelers will tour the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu, where they will stop by some of the region’s most beautiful monasteries and chat with the locals. They will then set off on their trek from the mountain city of Lukla.

Along the mountain trails, travelers will stay in lodges and visit with the people of the Himalaya. They will meet the mountain’s famed Sherpas and mountaineers, and learn about the environmental and cultural issues that affect Everest’s unique culture.

Trips depart May 20 and Oct. 7, and cost $2,695 per person.

Trek remote Bhutan

Myths and Mountains’ “READ Bhutan: Trekking Remote Merak and Sakteng” tour gives active, adventurous clients a chance to explore parts of Bhutan rarely seen by visitors. Through a collaboration with the non-profit, READ Global, the company has gained access to some the country’s most remote villages.

After a short time in the capital city of Thimphu, travelers will fly to a recently converted military airstrip near the village of Trashigang to start their 12-day trek. From there, they will climb mountain passes and trek through the habitat of the Himalaya’s “lost” tigers, which are often spotted by travelers. Travelers spend most nights camping in tents or staying the homes of local villagers.

The land is populated by the semi-nomadic people of Merak and Sakteng, who hold deep animist beliefs and make their living herding sheep. Travelers will have the opportunity to help locals with the chores of day-to-day life, and those who are handy in the kitchen may learn recipes for some local dishes.

The 16-day tour departs October 6 and costs $5,195 per person.

Hike the sacred Inca Trail

Machu Picchu is one of the wonders of the world, and attracts thousands of travelers each year who want to check the trip off their “bucket lists”. Myths and Mountains’ “Walking in the Sacred Footsteps of the Incas: The Inca Trail Trek” is geared toward travelers who would prefer a more profound experience with ruins and the mountains that surround them.

This ten-day trip starts off with an intimate tour of bustling Cusco, and the surrounding ruins. This includes a full day trip to the Sacred Valley, where natives sell food and crafts from the Amazon. After acquainting themselves with the city, travelers will embark on a four-day trek through the cloud forests of the Peruvian Andes.

Trekkers will reach the ruins by the ancient and sacred Inca trail.

Over the course of their trek, they will pass through remote mountain villages and spend nights out under the stars in Peru’s serene high country. The trek will culminate in a guided tour of Machu Picchu, the famous walled city perched at 8,000 feet above sea level.

The 10-day tour departs weekly and costs $2,995 per person.

About Myths and Mountains

Founded in 1984 by veteran adventurer Toni Neubauer, Myths and Mountains fosters intimate cross-cultural experiences. The company’s tours are designed to take travelers to the very heart of the places they are visiting, whether that means trekking the remote passes of Bhutan or learning traditional medicine from the shamans of the Amazon. These efforts have established a solid place for Myths and Mountains in the adventure travel industry; the company was chosen as one of National Geographic Adventure’s Best Adventure Travel Companies in 2009, won Travel + Leisure’s 2010 Global Vision Award, and Neubauer herself was chosen as a Top Travel Specialist by Condé Nast Traveler in 2011.
