Johnson Controls in the running for Gold Medal at Green Olympics in Beijing

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 31, 2008 ) HONG KONG, China – Johnson Controls, the global leader that brings ingenuity to the places where people live, work and travel could be in the running for a gold medal at the “Green” Olympics taking place in Beijing.

Johnson Controls is playing a key role in helping China realise its dream of staging a 'Green Olympics' with the installation of smart building solutions at 18 Olympic stadiums and supporting facilities,

The Olympic venues include the National Stadium (“Bird’s Nest”), National Indoor Stadium (“Turtle Back”), Beijing Olympic Tower, Peking University Stadium, Laoshan Velodrome, Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, National Convention Center, Tianjin Olympic Games Organizing Committee Office Building, new CCTV Headquarters, and Beijing's Capital International Airport T3.

Throughout the Olympics, Johnson Controls will have a team of engineers available at each venue 24x7 ready to ensure the smooth running of the games.

"While energy is essential to economic growth and prosperity today, sustainability is the key to success in the future. China is now taking the initiative in energy conservation and environmental protection and is growing to be a market with large potential," said Steve Roell, the CEO of Johnson Controls, who was addressing the 2008 China Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Forum.

"China is the worldÂ’s second biggest market for building control and HVAC services businesses, and it is predicted to soon become the biggest market in the world. Johnson Controls is developing and bringing in more energy-saving and environment-friendly products and systems to the Chinese market which will enable Chinese users to enhance energy efficiency and eventually achieve the aim of energy-saving and emission reduction."

Emerging "green demands" from China play an important role in Johnson Controls global strategy, with the company already making a significant contribution to energy conservation with the successful completion of many China projects:

- Johnson Controls’ helped reduce the annual operation cost at the National Stadium (“Bird’s Nest”) by over 15%, thanks to the installation of their advanced York centrifugal chiller with R134A environmental refrigerant. The chiller utilizes advanced ice storage technology and low temperature ice water stored at night to provide cooling during the day, while effectively reducing energy needs at night and during transitional seasons.

- Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, one of the world's largest district cooling systems and the largest in China, awarded Johnson Controls its biggest refrigeration contract in China. The district includes 10 universities, 57 research institutes, and a community of 400,000 people with 3.5 million square meters of indoor space. Advanced technology enables cooling capacity to be stored at night for use during peak daytime hours.
Through chilled water with large temperature difference, the cost of refrigeration is reduced by 40%.

- Johnson Controls has also provided the Administration Building of Beijing Planning Board with energy-saving services, including energy detection, diagnosis, evaluation, and reform, which saw building operation costs reduced by 13% in just six months. The project is now regarded as a model for promoting energy conservation in the construction of Chinese government buildings.

- Utilized in many landmark buildings such as the Shanghai World Finance Center, Pudong International Airport, Olympic facilities like the Laoshan Velodrome, Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium, and Peking University Stadium, the industry-leading Metasys building management system allows building operators access and control via the Internet, PDAs, and mobile devices anywhere in the world. Metasys integrates building systems such as lighting, access, and fire/safety systems to ensure minimum energy costs.

Johnson Controls is now leading global development in building energy efficiency. With over 120 years of rich experience, Johnson Controls is carrying out sustainable development projects in 300 locations worldwide, delivering more than US$2 billion in energy and operational savings every year. These savings amount to planting 3.8 billion trees or reducing emissions from 250 million mid-sized cars.
