New Michigan State University Art Museum Opens reports Twelve 21 Gallery

(I-TravelNewswire.Com, November 18, 2012 ) Orlando, FL -- Saturday marked the debut of the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The museum will house more than 7,500 contemporary art objects and will serve both as a cultural show place and a teaching institution for the university.

The museum, which cost $40 million to construct, was designed by architect Zaha Hadid and funded by private donations. So far, nearly $39 million has been raised, with the bulk of it coming from founding donors Eli and Edythe Broad, who supplied the main gift of $28 million in 2007.

In a statement, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said that this is something that has been a long time coming for the university.

"Great art deserves great architecture, and so does a great university," said Simon. "The Broad Museum's bold concept and design reflect Michigan State's ethos of connecting both campus and community to world-class innovation, global vision and transformative opportunity."

As part of providing viewing of contemporary art works in a historical context, the Broad Art Museum will work to develop a series of partnerships with the international artistic community and contemporary art spaces worldwide.

This is not Eli Broad’s first significant donation to MSU. Broad, the co-founder of The Broad Foundation, also endowed the university’s Eli Broad College of Business in 1991. In a joint statement with his wife, Broad noted that the museum has particular significance to them because of the intersection it creates between education and art.

"Edye and I are delighted to make this innovative museum possible.” Broad said. “We expect that people from East Lansing and around the world will be drawn to see this bold architecture as much as to view the art within its walls.”

The museum will open following a brief ceremony featuring the Broads, Simon, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, and U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow.
