Nonprofits Taking Unwanted Replaced and Unwanted Gadgets Following Holidays reports Staying Places

(I-TravelNewswire.Com, January 05, 2013 ) ESSEX, UK -- Those who were lucky enough to receive a new electronic device for the holidays are faced with the trouble of finding something to do with their old, and now archaic, version from years past.

For many, the best option is to recycle the device or gadget, and now there is an easy way to do so. There are several nonprofit organizations that make it easier than ever for consumers to recycle their often difficult-to-recycle items. The organizations will not only take electronic items, but also styrofoam and old Christmas lights.

“All of these electronics have something valuable,” said Kelly Bell, coordinator of the Lane County Master Recycler program.

Shortly after Christmas, many individuals are looking for way to clear out the clutter in their residence to make room for all the new items. Donating unwanted or unnecessary items is always a popular options. Locations such as St. Vincent de Paul locations will accept donations, as well as styrofoam packaging that was used to shop the new items.

The Waste Free Holidays series suggests NextSTep Recycling in west Eugene for ease of removal of unwanted items. NextStep can refurbish many electronic items, which are given to people in need as the organization helps ready them for new job opportunities. The items that cannot be repaired by NextSTep are recycled instead.

“If it plugs in or runs on batteries, we take it,” NextStep Executive Director John Barnum said. “And we want it. We keep it out of a landfill that way.”

“It’s amazing, the amount of equipment that runs through here on a weekly basis,” said Barnum, adding that the volume starts to increase when the seasonal sales on electronics begin in November.

Next Step is a nonprofit, and the county supports the efforts by the company in order to divert would-be waste and lessen the impact it has on landfills, both locally and regionally.

NextStep is able to attain 95% self-funded efforts and brings in money from eBay sales as well as its standing locations of business.

“The sooner that people get those things out of the closet, out of the drawers, the more likely those items can be refurbished and either be given in the form of a tech grant or sold at a very reasonable cost fully equipped to use,” Bell said. “The e-readers, smartphones, iPads, the new gaming systems — some people were standing in line to get these things for themselves or for others. Electronics are such a big part of our holiday giving and for many of us it’s not an electronic that we don’t already have, it’s some newer thing than we already possess.”
