(I-TravelNewswire.Com, January 26, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- There was a minor decline in the tourism traffic in Greece, as visiting numbers dropped by 5.2% in the first nine months of 2012. The numbers were released by the the Bank of Greece recently, who also noted receipts were also down from 2011.
Within 2012, traffic totaled 13.4 million individuals, which is down from 14.2 million over the same nine-month period in 2011. The receipt totals from tourism fell 3.2%.
Stay-overs also declined from 133.4 million to 126.7 million in the same time period.
The European Union’s contribution to Greek tourism amounted to a just under two-thirds of the total. The 63.4% was a reduction of 8.3% from 2011, and most of that drop was due to the 11.7% decline in new arrivals from the eurozone. Arrivals from the EU to states outside the area declined 2.8%, which accounts for 3.42 million travelers.
There was a noted increase in visitors outside the EU, which rose 0.6% and increased their share of the total of foreign visitors by 2.1%. German market registered at 5.3% in decline, while the French arrivals dropped a whopping 14.4%. Visitors from across the Channel saw a large leap in totals, with a 15.3% surplus. The number of arrivals from Russia also saw a quality increase, as it jumped 23.7% in 2012. United State’s travelers were the worst mark, with a slump of 23.3% making their way to Greece.
Receipts from the EU visitors dropped to 5.94 billion euros, which constitutes a 6.7% decline, and is a 65.8% of the tourism in the year up to September. The receipts from non-EU tourists came in at 3.09 billion euros, and constitutes a drop of 4.1% from last year.
While the German and French receipts dropped to just over 2 billion euros in total, the British visitors had a growth in receipt. Russians brought in 32.1% more money into Greece as well.
