Study Finds Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs Hold Highest Ticket Fees for Fans

(I-TravelNewswire.Com, June 19, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Prices for sporting events can often become significantly slashed in the secondary market, while Major League Baseball team's websites are likely the last place a fan would want to look for a ticket.

The highest prices are the most obvious reason for avoiding the MLB team's site, but there is another reason. The team's direct websites provide an assortment of fees that are either hidden or obvious. The consumer will sometimes may as much as 33% on fees, taking a $20 ticket up to $30 thanks to “convenience fees” as well as “order processing.” Other fees will sometimes lack names altogether.

Chris Jaffe did some research of his own to find out how major league teams were charging fans. He looked at how the fees were broken down, and just how they compared across the league.

The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and New York Yankees are, not surprisingly, the worst out of all the MLB teams.

According to Jaffe's research, even the cheapest seats at the Red Sox stadium charged $11.50 per ticket in the extra fees. That doubled the price of what were otherwise the cheapest tickets by nearly 100%, from $12 to $23.50.

The Cubs were stated to have the highest extra fees, with $29.04 if you buy four seats at a time, while the Yankees charge an extra $26 for four seats.

The White Sox and Angels were found to have cut their ticket fees, along with 10 other teams. Jaffe stated his theory on that strategy.

“Flipping it around, [nearly] a third of the teams have dropped their add-on prices, no team more drastically than the White Sox. I wrote an entire column on them last year, noting that they had counter-productive pricing policies. In terms of ticket prices, add-on costs, and seemingly all else, the Sox would make sure they were lower than the Cubs, but by very little.”

Jaffe concluded that, “There wasn’t much reason for a Cub fan to switch allegiances if it meant just a few pennies on the dollar.”

“I guess the Sox are making a more aggressive effort to grow their fan base by having lower prices. Lord knows they have the empty upper-deck seats to put them in. The damn shame of it all is that the Sox changed their prices just in time for their offense to completely fall apart.”

Jaffe finished by concluding, “The Angels reduced their fees after missing the postseason. On the flip side, the Tigers did likewise after winning the pennant. That’s nice of them.”
