Apple To Discontinue The IPad Mini Amidst IPhone 6 Plus Success.

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, March 14, 2015 ) London, UK -- Cellphone users have always sought out thinner and lighter devices year after year, but in a new generation of supersized handsets versatility is king. The iPhone 6 Plus, Apple's late but exquisitely aggressive entry into the formerly Samsung dominated ‘phablet' territory, is perhaps become the most versatile of them all. Its groundbreaking success however is now set to shift the future of the iPad line.

In short, the iPad Mini is dead. It was perhaps as predictable as the end of the iPod Classic. It can still be purchased of course but reasons for doing so are becoming increasingly marginalised. Like the iPod Touch it may just sit around pointlessly at the back of the store for those that didn't get the memo. The merits of the iPad Mini were always mainly comparative rather than unique. It never had that killer USP.

However none of this matters with an alternative that fits in your (big) pocket, boasts impressive battery life, an express A8 processor, a 5.5 inch 1920×1080 retina display. And yes, and happens to make phone calls as well. Winner: The 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus.

The latest generation of handsets is also another clear example of the evolving habits of consumers to creating and consuming content on the move. With data speeds from LTE and beyond that have responded to the call it is now habitual for most to download and consume not just their music but TV shows and full-length movies on their phones.

Companies beyond Apple are also benefitting from this shift. Third party accessory producers are riding the crest of this wave. George Balfour-Kinnear from Boom Products, a company that is carving a name for itself in the accessory market, comments "It is no surprise to us that the iPhone 6 Plus has actually outsold the smaller iPhone 6 in many areas. It is the ultimate device and doesn't compromise in executing any task. Watching video and movies is especially wonderful on the iPhone 6 Plus. We can see this reflected in the amount of people seeking out our cases with the built-in stands. 2-3 years ago it was not a highly sought out feature but almost all our designs now incorporate some sort of stand."*

Apple's development timeline from here is clear. Whilst the iPad mini and the iPod Touch are discarded to the gadget retirement home to hang with the iPod Classic we can expect the line to go even larger in the footsteps of the phones. The alleged forthcoming iPad Pro, as reported by MacRumors.com, may have a screen size of up to 12.9 inches and a USB-C port according to some reports! 2015 is going to be exciting for Apple, even beyond the highly anticipated Apple Watch on 24th April.

*Boom's latest Shock-2 Protection Case (pictured), complete with built in stand, is now available for both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus from Amazon.
