(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 20, 2010 ) MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky.- Those looking for a wild weekend below ground, can find it at Mammoth Cave National Park - by taking the plunge 300 feet underground on the Wild Cave Tour of Mammoth Cave. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world with over 367 miles explored. Parts of these caves have been toured by visitors since 1840. The Wild Cave Tour is limited to 14 people and meanders over a distance of 5 ½ miles. Exhilarating, yet challenging aspects of spelunking here include free-climbing cave walls, lengthy crawls through areas as tight as 9 inches, and high hand and knee crawls over jagged rocks. Highlights include historic landmarks such as the 200 step staircase at the Carmichael Entrance, the gypsum encrusted Cleaveland Avenue and Snowball Room, and the fascinating Frozen Niagara formation. For a similar, yet tamer and shorter excursion, visitors can try the Introduction to Caving tour. At the end of the day, tired cave explorers can retire to the Mammoth Cave Hotel - mere steps from the actual cave.
