(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 15, 2011 ) Shelbyville, Illinois -- The Shelbyville Illinois MAPPING committee has been working with the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs in a proactive approach to strategize the future vision of the community. MAPPING stands for Management and Planning Programs Involving Non-metropolitan Groups.
Over the last six months, a diverse focus group of about 60 citizens — residents, businesspeople, and elected officials representing a cross-section of Shelbyville — have worked closely to determine “What does Shelbyville Illinois want to be when it grows up?” and with that, that, have identified five overarching goals for the city:
• Increase tourism traffic
• Grow business and jobs
• Improve the downtown experience
• Promote education
• Strengthen community involvement
Within each of the five goals, more than 50 sub-initiatives have been identified, rationalized and ranked based on factors of priority, time to complete and funding.
“As part of our rationalization process we also determined the city needs a holistic marketing strategy which will include elements of online and traditional marketing” said John Chambers one of the group’s steering committee leaders. “These types of marketing plans typically take time to create, but the group wants to take immediate action”.
In anticipation of finalizing the long-term plans, the committee is leveraging social media outlets like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to get the word out on behalf of the City of Shelbyville IL as a way to start promoting the city online.
“Our community has loads of opportunity and we want to spread the word to the rest of the world about the many great things Shelbyville Illinois has to offer.” says Mayor Roy Shuff. “The city is working in conjunction with the MAPPING group in a larger effort to attract people to enjoy the wonderful things about our city, but right now we’re taking a tactical approach to get Shelbyville more online visibility. Our opportunity to leverage social media was an immediate, no-cost way to make it happen. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
In addition to showcasing the fine qualities about Shelbyville IL, the social media sites will also be used as an online outlet to promote local events like the upcoming Scarecrow Daze, Touchstone Energy Balloon Fest and Festival of Lights.
In conjunction with the social media sweeps, the MAPPING group has adopted a new name, “Shelbyville Works!”
“There’s been a ton of time, hard work and mind power contributed by everyone involved in this initiative.” Chambers added. “The group felt the change was necessary to better represent future efforts and the brand name really reflects the positive direction we’re headed in.”
“As an ambassador of the city I invite everyone to check out the new social media sites that contain pictures and short videos about the city.” Mayor Shuff said in closing.
The social media sites are located online at Facebook.com/ShelbyvilleIL Twitter.com/ShelbyvilleIL and YouTube.com/ShelbyvilleIL
