(I-TravelNewswire.Com, August 18, 2012 ) Tucson, AZ -- The temperature averages a high of 72 during the late morning of the race. Participate and you’ll find great restaurants and world class resorts, the friendliest people in the country, authentic Mexican food and those famous Southwest sunsets.
Riders will have their choice of riding 111, 85, 60 or 42 miles, as well as a ten, five, and 1/4 mile Fun Rides. Many of the roads on the tour route have bike shoulders. El Tour de Tucson attracts more than 9,000 cyclists annually. A super lineup of unique features includes: three-day Bike EXPO, exciting mass-start spectacle, mariachis at the first two (usually dry) river crossings, route stations with water and snacks spaced about 7-10 miles apart, bike Patrol and SAG support, traffic control at intersections, timing chips, plenty of morale-boosting volunteers and spectators, Olympic-style medallions to all finishers and an unforgettable finish line featuring a “Downtown Fiesta” with a beer garden, music, massages and more.
El Tour de Tucson has been ridden by professional racers such as Lance Armstrong, Chris Horner, Greg LaMond, Jeannie Longo, Robbie Ventura, Marie Holden Floyd Landis, Steve Bauer, Davis Phinney, Karen Carpenter Phinney, Taylor Phinney and Bob Roll. In 2011, some very high profile athletes came to ride the tour: Bill Walton and Barry Bonds. It is not just for high end athletes, riders of all abilities and skill levels have fun completing the rides.
El Tour de Tucson welcomes riders to their city with open arms. There is a designated cycling ambassador available to answer any and all questions about the route, hotels, restaurants, attractions, and travel. All visitors’ questions can be sent to media@perimeterbicycling.com.
There are many bike stores in the area prepared to receive, set up your bike, and package it for its return trip. The staff and volunteers at El Tour de Tucson will strive to make this the best cycling experience you have ever had.
Tucson is a great cycling community. Many El Tour de Tucson participants build a vacation around the bike event and stay a week to join in the local rides, visit some attractions and experience the desert Southwest. In August 2012, Outside Magazine designated Tucson #1 on Outside’s Top 10 Best Bike Towns. Part of the decision to award Tucson the number on ranking is due to 700 miles of bike lanes and mountain ranges for climbing. In 2012, the Tucson region received the “Gold Award” as a bicycle friendly community from the League of American Bicyclists.
